How do I know if my amp works?

By James Bradley

How do I know if my amp works?

One of the quickest ways is to simply touch the power wire from the amp to the positive post of the battery and the ground wire to the negative battery post. If the power light comes on, it can be ascertained that the amplifier has a good circuit board.

What does it mean when an amp is in protection mode?

Many times, the protection indicator will blink to indicate the reason the amp is in protect mode. The owner’s manual is the best source to help you decode the blink sequence. This is common on older Alpine amplifiers. Not all amps have a protection mode indicator.

What to do if your amp doesn’t go into protect?

If the amp goes into protect with the RCA cables plugged in, go to step 4. If it doesn’t go into protect, reconnect one pair of speaker wires at a time. If you’re using a mono amp and have only one pair of speaker wires, you’ll need to disconnect all but one speaker from the other end of the speaker wires.

When does the protect led go off in an amplifier?

Notes: Many amplifiers will illuminate their protect LED during the mute delay (when you initially power up the amplifier). After a short delay (2-10 seconds), the protect LED will go off. For those amplifiers this is normal. Other amplifiers ONLY illuminate the protect LED when there is a problem.

What is the color of the protect light on an amp?

Generally, the power light is green or blue and the protect light is red but on some amps, the protect light is green and the power light is red. Look at the silkscreen on the amplifier to confirm the function of the LEDs Some amplifiers have multiple protect lights.

What to do when your amp goes into Protect Mode?

If the voltage remains near or above 12v but the amp still goes into protect mode, disconnect all speaker wires from the speaker terminals of the amp and disconnect signal cables from the amp.

How to fix a protect display home audio amplifier?

Unplug the receiver’s power cord from the wall and leave unplugged for at least one hour. Remove all speaker and audio cables from the back of the receiver while waiting. Reconnect the power cord after at least one hour has passed. Leave the speaker and audio cables disconnected. Turn the receiver on and turn the volume to the maximum setting.

For those amplifiers this is normal. Other amplifiers ONLY illuminate the protect LED when there is a problem.

How does self diagnostic work on protect amplifier?

Self-diagnostic will start at the timing of next power on, after goes to the protect mode by Current detection or DC voltage detection. Only On/Standby key could work in this mode. Also remote control does not work. However, the CLEAR operation is enabled.
