What time of year do sycamore trees lose their leaves?

spring
Conversely, sycamore trees are notorious for dropping their leaves all winter long and are not fully void of leaves until the new leaves emerge the following spring. Needless to say, the time and labor involved when raking the leaves of these two trees is significantly different.

Do sycamore trees lose their leaves?

Because it’s a deciduous tree, it’s natural for your sycamore to drop its leaves each fall. However, if your tree’s leaves are wilting and falling off soon after they emerge in spring, this is a sign of trouble.

Why are the sycamore trees dying?

Question: I have noticed that a lot of very mature (> 80 ft) sycamore trees look ill. They don’t seem to have as many leaves, or as large as they usually get and some have already turned brown and died. The culprit is sycamore anthracnose, a fungal disease that causes damage and death of leaves as well as stem cankers.

Why is my oak tree dropping leaves in July?

The leaf drop is an adaptation that allows the trees to shed leaves in summer to reduce the potential for even greater water loss. The fewer leaves, the less water needed to keep them happy and the less water escaping from the soft leaf tissue.

Why are the leaves falling off my sycamore tree?

The leaf drop is likely due to anthracnose. Anthracnose is a common fungal disease of sycamore, ash, maple, oak, and other trees. Anthracnose is most severe in years with cool, wet spring weather.

What should I do if my sycamore tree has anthracnose?

One primary “management option” for sycamore anthracnose is to wait – the tree will likely recover with another flush of leaves.

When do Sycamores put out second flush of leaves?

Temperature and rainfall significantly impact the overall severity of this disease. However, don’t panic, even in seasons with more severe infections, when the weather gets warmer and drier as the season progresses, anthracnose disease should abate, and the sycamores should put out a second flush of leaves by the end of the season.

Why are my Sycamores not growing in Michigan?

The leaf drop is likely due to anthracnose. Anthracnose is a common fungal disease of sycamore, ash, maple, oak, and other trees. Anthracnose is most severe in years with cool, wet spring weather.

What kind of weather does a sycamore tree need?

(See below the weather records taken at WLFI at West Lafayette): This is Sycamore Anthracnose disease. It occurs typically in spring foliation during a period of persistent, cool, wet weather where the foliage is often wet for a long period of time & temperatures fail to rise above the 50s for many days (with overnight lows in the 30s & 40s).

When do sycamore trees die in southern Indiana?

In a really rough year, parts of the crown may show complete die-back. Two particular rough, rough years I remember as a kid in southern Indiana were 1992 & 1997 when large pieces of crown died in trees & it took until mid- to late-June for the trees to really foliate well.

When to treat a sycamore tree for anthracnose?

Foliage that develops in late spring and early summer shouldn’t become infected as warmer, drier weather suppresses anthracnose. Most sycamores should have a good canopy of leaves by late June or early July. Since anthracnose does not cause serious harm to sycamores, fungicide treatments are rarely warranted.
