At least that way you could confirm that the system setup does/does not work. The current problem could be something as simple as a break in the optical cable itself. For digital inputs you have to go to the setup screen and assign them properly.

Why is my Denon AVR s750h audio cutting out?
Audio returns once the receiver switches back to CBL/SAT input. This is starting to get really annoying. Doing a test tone I get sound through all speakers, and pressing info on the remote shows the speakers are ‘active’, but the input signal only displays the front 2 speakers and says the signal is in 2.0. The input select in the setup is set as AUTO.

Not in ” pure” speaker mode which is stereo only. ???? Go through all movie speaker options. The input signal only shows 2 speakers, although there are 4 shown on the right hand of the screen under active speakers. Yep, test tone still has sound through rear speakers. No change in speakers wires or connections.
