Caladiums do not begin to grow until the soil temperature reaches 70 F, so cooler soil will mean a longer wait for the plants to emerge. Also, caladiums multiply as they grow, so one bulb may have now formed ten. (Hence, richer the soil, better the bulbs).
What do you do with caladium bulbs in the winter?
Storing Caladium Bulbs Place your plants in a cool, dark area for 2 to 3 weeks. This process will cure the bulbs and cause them to go dormant. After a few weeks, cut the tops off level with the soil line. Brush away any loose soil, cut out any rotted areas, and apply a fungicide.

If the conditions are right, some of these varieties could get 2 ½ feet tall with leaves over a foot across. Planting smaller bulbs in these varieties will even give you large leaves if your growing conditions are optimum. With smaller bulbs, you will just need to plant the bulbs closer together to get the same great look.

We often use the smaller bulbs as seed for the next season’s crop and sell the larger bulbs. Depending on the season, more often than not, the Jumbo and Mammoth bulbs are not as abundant as the smaller sizes.
