Why does my speaker pop when I turn it on?

Speaker crackling is almost always caused by a connection problem. The first thing to do is to check the wire connections between the amplifier and the terminals on the speaker itself. If the wire has a tendency to get moved around, perhaps by a cat or dog, it’s a possibility something has come loose.

Can a phono output be connected to a turntable?

If it has, it is perfectly ok to connect your turntable PHONO output to the PHONO input on the receiver. If neither your turntable or receiver has a built-in preamp, you’ll have to get hold of a standalone preamp that connects between the PHONO output on your turntable and one of the line level inputs on your receiver (LINE, AUX, CD, TAPE, etc.)

By altering the speaker level to 10db higher than they are supposed to be set, all you’ve done is increase the volume relative to reference by 10db. THe receiver is now incorrectly calibrated. You could have achieved exactly the same result by simply increasing the master volume by 10db.
